MKV is a container that can hold many codecs. Chrome and Edge open MKV files whose video is H.264, VP9 or AV1; Firefox and Safari often do not. If your MKV will not open, use Chrome, or remux it to MP4 (VLC or HandBrake), then trim up to 15 seconds and create your GIF.
Drop the .mkv file onto the box, ideally in Chrome or Edge.
Select up to 15 seconds and choose a preset.
Click Create GIF and download it. Subtitles and audio are not included.
| File | Opens in the browser? | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 / VP9 / AV1 in MKV | Chrome and Edge, usually | Firefox and Safari may refuse the container. |
| HEVC (H.265) in MKV | Only with HEVC hardware support | Convert to H.264 MP4 if it fails. |
| MPEG-2, VC-1 or other older codecs | No | Convert to H.264 MP4 first. |
| Use | Setting | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Film and TV scenes | Balanced: 480 px, 15 fps | Real footage gets large fast; keep it short. |
| Anime and flat-color animation | More detail: 720 px, 20 fps | Flat colors compress well in GIF. |
| Reaction GIFs | Smaller file: 320 px, 10 fps | Loads quickly in chats. |
Size figures come from our 3 November 2026 FFmpeg tests; the full table is on the batch converter page. Limits for every source: up to 15 seconds, 300 frames and 960 px wide per GIF; source files up to 200 MB.
No. The video is opened by your browser and turned into a GIF with FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly, so it stays on your device. It is free, with no account, no daily limit and no watermark.
No. Only the video track is converted; subtitle and audio tracks are ignored.
Try Chrome or Edge first. If it still fails, the codec is not supported by your browser; remux or convert it to an H.264 MP4 with VLC or HandBrake.
