MP4 supports millions of colors instead of GIF's 256, so gradients show less banding and dithering.
With Loop off at Low quality, our pixel-art test MP4 was 72.6% smaller than the GIF.
Your GIFs never leave your device. All processing is local.
MP4 plays on most social platforms, messaging apps and video players.
The MP4 is a standard H.264 video track with no audio, so you can drop it into standard video editors and apps and add music or a voice-over.
Repeat the animation inside the MP4 from 1 to 10 times, for players that do not loop.
Three simple steps to process your GIF
Drag and drop your GIF file or click to browse from your device.
Set quality level, output width, and loop settings for your video.
Click convert and download your MP4 video file.
Short answer: a single-pass MP4 was 23% to 99% smaller than the source GIF in our tests. How much you save depends on the content and on two settings, Quality and Loop. We converted three 5-second, 480×270, 15 fps GIFs with the exact settings this tool uses:
| Test GIF | GIF size | Low, 1 pass | Medium, 1 pass | High, 1 pass | Default (High, loop 3×) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Screen recording style (text, flat UI colors) | 1,143 KB | 51 KB (−95.5%) | 105 KB (−90.8%) | 291 KB (−74.5%) | 876 KB (−23.4%) |
| Smooth gradients (fractal zoom) | 4,366 KB | 45 KB (−99.0%) | 170 KB (−96.1%) | 480 KB (−89.0%) | 1,451 KB (−66.8%) |
| Pixel art (hard edges, noisy motion) | 2,897 KB | 795 KB (−72.6%) | 1,369 KB (−52.7%) | 2,226 KB (−23.1%) | 6,696 KB (+131%) |

How we measured: test clips generated with FFmpeg 8.0.1 (testsrc2, mandelbrot and life sources, GIF palette via palettegen/paletteuse), then converted with -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -crf 35|28|20 -preset medium -movflags +faststart, the same arguments the converter runs in your browser. Measured 3 November 2026. Your own GIFs will land at different points in these ranges.
| Setting | What it changes | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Quality: Low | H.264 CRF 35 | Chat apps and previews where size matters most |
| Quality: Medium | H.264 CRF 28 | Most social posts and web embeds |
| Quality: High (default) | H.264 CRF 20 | Pixel art, small text, detailed UI captures |
| Output width | Scales the video; height follows the aspect ratio | Halving the width cuts pixels by about 75% |
| Loop video (on, 3× by default) | Writes the animation into the file 1–10 times | Players that do not loop MP4 on their own |

Every output is padded to even width and height (H.264 with yuv420p requires it) and written with +faststart, so the video can start playing before it has fully downloaded.
| GIF | MP4 (H.264) | |
|---|---|---|
| Colors per frame | Up to 256 (palette) | Full color (H.264, 4:2:0) |
| Compression | Lossless LZW per frame | Lossy, reuses data between frames |
| Transparency | Yes (1-bit) | No: transparent areas become solid |
| Looping | Built into the file | Set by the player (or repeated in the file) |
| Audio | No | Possible, but this tool outputs video only |
| Where it plays | Images: email, docs, Markdown, forums | Video players, social uploads, HTML5 video |

In those cases, shrink the GIF with the GIF compressor instead. To go the other way, use MP4 to GIF.
