Short answer: a GIF you upload to a Discord message can be up to 20 MB on a free account, 50 MB with Nitro Basic, and up to 1 GB with Nitro. In a server boosted to Level 2 or Level 3, every member gets 50 MB or 100 MB in that server. Custom emoji must be under 256 KB. Stickers don't take GIFs at all: they need APNG or PNG, exactly 320 × 320 px, under 512 KB. We checked every number against Discord's Help Center on November 3, 2026 (links in the table below).
Discord raised the free limit from 10 MB to 20 MB in August 2026, so guides that still say 10 MB are out of date. If a GIF that "should fit" fails to upload, see the troubleshooting section.

Two notes from the same Help Center pages:
- Discord now checks file size before compression. Since August 2026, mobile uses the same pre-compression check that desktop has always used, so the original file has to fit. Discord says desktop and iOS uploads should get easier, but Android users may hit the limit more often, because Android source files tend to be larger.
- Limits are being tested. The File Attachments FAQ says Discord is "experimenting with various file upload size limits," so a few accounts may see a higher limit. Plan for 20 MB unless you have Nitro or a boosted server.
Discord doesn't publish a maximum length or pixel size for GIF attachments. The real limit is file size, and duration, width and frame rate decide how big the file gets.
How big is a GIF from a real video? Our test
Most "Discord GIF" advice skips the real question: how many megabytes does a clip actually produce? We ran one public test clip through our video to GIF converter at each of its three presets, plus its maximum width, and checked every result against the limits above.
- Test clip: Big Buck Bunny (© Blender Foundation, CC BY 3.0), an animated film. We used the 10-second 1920 × 1080, 60 fps H.264 MP4 from test-videos.co.uk (5,238,714 bytes; SHA-256 begins e131ad42), so you can repeat the test.
- Method: our converter's default pipeline (one optimized palette per clip, Bayer dithering), run in Chrome on an Apple-silicon Mac on November 3, 2026. File sizes are the downloaded GIFs, measured with
ffprobe.

File sizes are exact byte counts divided by 1,000,000 (for example, 1,408,944 bytes = 1.41 MB).
What this shows:
- Same 4 seconds, about 19× the size. Going from 320 px at 10 fps to 960 px at 24 fps took the file from 1.41 MB to 26.57 MB (18.9×). The 960 px version is the only one in the test that a free account can't send.
- Length scales almost linearly. At Balanced settings, 4 seconds came to 5.05 MB and 10 seconds to 12.71 MB: about 1.27 MB per second for this clip. At that rate, a 15-second Balanced GIF, the longest our converter makes, would land just under 20 MB. That's an estimate from two runs, not a measured file.
- Emoji need a different plan. Even the smallest preset produced a 1.41 MB file, about five times Discord's 256 KB emoji limit. Emoji need a short, square, much smaller loop.
Your numbers will differ, because file size depends on the footage. Flat cartoons and screen recordings compress well. Grainy camera video, confetti and fast pans compress badly. Use the table as a starting point, check the file size the converter shows before you download, and use our GIF size calculator to estimate a clip before you convert it.

In our test, a 4-second Balanced GIF at 480 px came to 5.05 MB, a quarter of the free limit, so 480 px leaves room for longer reactions. A 4-second clip at 720 px still fit at 13.99 MB, but longer or grainier clips at that width pass 20 MB quickly, so check the size readout before you download.
How to make a GIF for Discord with VideoToGifConverter
- Open the converter and add your clip. It accepts MP4, MOV, WebM, M4V, MKV and AVI files up to 200 MB. Conversion runs in your browser, so the video isn't uploaded to our server.
- Trim to the moment. Set start and end times. One GIF can be 0.1 to 15 seconds long.
- Pick a preset. Smaller file (320 px, 10 fps, 128 colors) suits emoji drafts and quick reactions. Balanced (480 px, 15 fps, 256 colors) suits most chat GIFs. More detail (720 px, 20 fps, 256 colors) suits short, high-detail clips, or longer ones if you have Nitro or a boosted server. Under Advanced settings you can pick a width up to 960 px, a frame rate of 5, 10, 15, 20, 24 or 30 fps, and 128 or 256 colors.
- Create the GIF and check the size. The result shows the file size before you download it.
- Too big? Change one thing at a time. Cut the length first, then the width, then the frame rate. Or run the file through the GIF compressor or resize GIF tool.
- Upload to Discord. Drag the file into the message box, or use the + button and Upload a File.
There's no Discord preset or file-size target in the converter. You choose the settings, and the size readout tells you whether it fits.
Making Discord emoji and sticker GIFs
Animated emoji are the strictest: under 256 KB each. Even a 320 px, 10 fps clip is usually several times too big, so:
- keep the loop to 1–3 seconds,
- crop to a square around the subject with crop GIF,
- shrink it to emoji size with resize GIF, then compress it if it's still over 256 KB.
Discord accepts JPEG, PNG, GIF or WEBP for emoji. Its Help Center doesn't set pixel dimensions for emoji, only the 256 KB cap, and the upload screen lets you resize, rotate or zoom the image. Every server can hold 50 static custom emoji by default, and the Server Boosting FAQ lists more emoji slots at each Boost level, up to 250 at Level 3.
Stickers can't be GIFs. Discord's sticker rules accept only APNG (animated) or PNG, exactly 320 × 320 px, up to 512 KB. Our tools export GIF and MP4, not APNG, so you'll need an APNG editor for the last step. Every server gets 5 free sticker slots; boosting raises that to 15, 30 or 60 (Custom Stickers FAQ).
GIF or MP4 on Discord?
Discord accepts MP4 video encoded with H.264, HEVC/H.265 or AV1. MP4 is far more efficient than GIF: our 10-second test clip is 5.24 MB as a 1920 × 1080 MP4, while the GIF of the same 10 seconds at only 480 × 270 came to 12.71 MB. Use:
- GIF when you want an endless silent loop that plays the same in every client, or when you plan to make it an emoji.
- MP4 for longer clips, clips with sound, or anything near your upload limit. You can turn a finished GIF into MP4 with GIF to MP4.

Discord GIF not uploading or not animating: fixes

Sending the same clip to WhatsApp and Telegram
People often make one clip for several chat apps, so here's how the other two handle GIFs:
- Telegram converts GIFs. Its developer docs say an uploaded GIF "will be automatically converted to an MPEG4 file by the server" (Telegram API: Working with GIFs). A short MP4 without sound gives you the same result with less upload, so GIF to MP4 is a good last step.
- WhatsApp doesn't publish a GIF size limit in its Help Center that we could find, so we don't quote one. Keep WhatsApp clips short (2–6 seconds at 320–480 px), and send an MP4 if the GIF won't attach.
The "Balanced" settings from our test above are a sensible starting point for all three apps. WhatsApp publishes no GIF size limit we could find, so test the clip there before you rely on it.
Discord GIF etiquette and accessibility
- Add alt text. Before you send, use Modify attachment (the pencil icon) to add an image description for screen-reader users (File Attachments FAQ). One line ("cat knocks a cup off a table") is enough.
- Mark spoilers. Use Discord's spoiler tag for GIFs from new episodes or game endings.
- Avoid rapid flashing. Fast strobing can trigger photosensitive users. Slow it down or pick another clip.
- Follow the rules. Discord's Community Guidelines apply to GIFs like any other upload, and many servers also keep GIFs to specific channels or cap how often you can post them.
